Grades of Nickel

Surepure Chemetals sells several grades of nickel:

  • Properties of Nickel 200

    Nickel 200 is a commercially pure wrought nickel. It has good mechanical properties and excellent resistance to many corrosive environments. Other useful features are its magnetic and magnetostrictive properties, high thermal and electrical conductivities, low gas content and low vapor pressure.

    Uses of Nickel 200

    The corrosion resistance of Nickel 200 makes it particularly useful for maintaining product purity in the handling of foods, synthetic fibers, and caustic alkalis; and also in structural applications where resistance to corrosion is a prime consideration. Other applications include chemical shipping drums, electrical and electronic parts, aerospace and missile components and rocket motor cases.

  • Properties of Nickel 201

    Nickel 201 has the exact same chemistry as Nickel 200 except the carbon is limited to 0.02% max. It is preferred to Nickel 200 for applications involving exposure to temperatures above 600°F.

    Uses of Nickel 201

    Some uses of Nickel 201 are getter tabs, heating element sheathing, spun anodes, special purpose electron tubes, structural components, fuel cells, Ni-Cd batteries, and transistor enclosures.

  • Properties of Nickel 205

    Nickel 205 is similar to Nickel 200 except for a slightly differently controlled chemical composition. It is appropriate for a wide variety of electrical and electronic applications.

    Uses of Nickel 205

    Some uses of Nickel 205 are support wires and rods, grid side rods, base pins, getter tabs, anodes, transistor enclosures, micromodule pins, spark gaps, magnetostriction devices, and resistance thermometer wire.

  • Properties of Nickel 270

    Nickel 270 is a high-purity product, with nominal nickel content of 99.98%. Its low hardness and good ductility allow heavy cold deformation without reannealing.

    Uses of Nickel 270

    Some uses of Nickel 270 are hydrogen thyratrons (due to Nickel 270's high purity), electrical resistance thermometers, X-ray emitters (cathodes and anodes), plater bars, passive cathodes, fluorescent lamp components, cathode shanks, and electrolytic cell anodes.

Nickel ASTM Specifications

Surepure Chemetals sells nickel covered by the ASTM B162 specification for Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 Plate, Sheet, and Strip.
We also sell nickel covered by the ASTM B160 specification for Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 Rod and Bar.

Harmonized System Export Codes for Nickel

The HS code for nickel bar and rod is 7505.11.
The HS code for nickel wire is 7505.21.
The HS code for nickel plates, sheet, strip, and foil is 7506.10.

Surepure Chemetals sells nickel in several forms:

Buy Nickel Wire and Rod

We use the term "wire" for smaller diameters that are supplied on a spool or as a coil.
We use the term "rod" when the diameter is large enough that it can be supplied as a straight length.

Buy Nickel Foil, Sheet, Plate, Strip, and Ribbon

We use the terms "foil," "sheet," and "plate" for shorter cut pieces (usually up to 12" long) that are usually supplied flat.
"Foil" is very thin;
"Sheet" is a little thicker and is thus a little stronger and bends less;
"Plate" is even thicker and is barely pliable.
We use the term "ribbon" for longer narrow pieces that are usually supplied on a spool.
We use the term "strip" for longer wider pieces that are usually supplied on a cardboard core.
